NewRo Runners: Bacon, Backroads, Run for Lou Klein, Plus Weekend Routes 3/22 & 3/23
Trail snacks, community support, social calendar launch, and a call for writers
From the Sole of My Shoe: Hungry Like the Wolf
Long-distance runners know two types of hunger. There's the metaphorical kind—that burning desire for faster times, longer distances, epic wins. Then there's the other kind—the primal, gnawing hunger that turns my "temple" of a body into a raging dumpster fire around the 90-minute mark of a run.
Up until that 90-minute threshold, I’m pretty sure I’m a perfectly reasonable running companion. I'm focused on form, engaged in conversation, living the runner's high. Then like clockwork, my stomach releases its battle cry. That empty feeling in my gut grows into an urgent demand that, if ignored, threatens to shut down all non-essential operations—like, you know, running.
In my younger days, I tried to outrun hunger through willpower and grit. Alas, hunger always wins. These days, I've embraced my role as the running equivalent of a snack sherpa, lugging what feels like an entire convenience store in my pack. Gels, gummies, drinks, trail mix, pretzels—I’ve got a moveable feast on my shoulders.
The real trick to keeping my internal systems happy, I've learned, isn't carrying the fuel, it's knowing exactly what to eat to keep that dumpster fire at bay. My current go-to combo might raise some eyebrows: bacon and pretzels. Sounds bizarre, perhaps, but it's the perfect balance of salty and saltier that keeps me moving. Deeper into the run, the bacon disintegrates into bits, coating the pretzels with an unctuous layer of grease that hits the flavor notes I’m craving. (Just don't forget the napkins—trust me on this one.)
I learned the hard way not to talk about food during long runs. It was a steamy summer 20-miler through Massachusetts woods, with mosquitoes swarming and our pace approaching glacial, when I made the rookie mistake of describing my post-run breakfast plans in vivid detail: eggs over easy, perfectly burnt toast, endless coffee. The runner next to me, already battling her own hunger demons, mustered just enough energy to glower, "No one wants to hear that right now," then shuffled ahead, leaving me alone with my thoughts and gnawing hunger.
I am older and a little wiser now. I try to keep my food fantasies to myself during runs, but I'm always happy to swap snack strategies over post-run coffee. Isn’t that what running communities are for? Sharing our trials, triumphs, and favorite trail snacks with people who actually want to hear about them.
Speaking of community...

Supporting Lou Klein's ALS Journey
Our friend and fellow runner Lou Klein needs our support. While Lou's spirit remains strong, he and his family are facing significant challenges ahead.
Your Support Will Help With:
• Daily care assistance
• Home accessibility modifications
• Medical expenses not covered by insurance
• Physical therapy
• Other essential family needs
Every contribution makes a difference, no matter the size.
Want to see Lou or help in person? Access Lou's CareCalendar using ID 317987 and security code 7841.
Another way to support Lou is to lace up on May 4! The 2025 Cinco Di Mile race has chosen to support Lou Klein and his family by donating a portion of this year's race proceeds to their ALS journey.
